The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified a 4-year-old Zion child killed in a head-on vehicle crash in Waukegan.

Waukegan Police and Waukegan Fire responded to the area of Sunset and Kellogg avenues for a two-vehicle crash with multiple injuries at 8:12 a.m. Wednesday morning, Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said in a news release.

First responders found two vehicles in the roadway had collided head on and multiple victims were discovered at the scene.

All victims were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, the release states.

A 4-year-old child who was riding in a booster seat in one of the vehicles was one of the victims in the crash, authorities said.

The child was transported to Vista Medical Center East with critical, life-threatening injuries, the release reads.

The child, later identified as Kaleb Hardge, was pronounced dead in the emergency room, officials said.

A preliminary investigation into the crash revealed the driver of one of the vehicles crossed the center line for an unknown reason, authorities said.

An autopsy was conducted on Kaleb Wednesday by the Lake County Coroners Office, the release reads.

The child died of blunt force injuries suffered as a result of the crash, authorities said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit, authorities said.
