An oversized box truck got wedged under the historic Robert Parker Coffin Bridge in Long Grove – again.

Motorists in Long Grove sent pictures to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner Wednesday showing the oversized box truck wedged under the canopy of the bridge.

The bridge is located at Robert Parker Coffin Road and Schaeffer Road in Long Grove.

The truck attempted to cross the bridge and struck the canopy, becoming wedged directly under a sign saying the bridge is only 8 feet, 6 inches tall.

A tow truck has responded to the scene and it’s unclear at this time if the bridge sustained damage.

According to records at the Lake & McHenry County Scanner, this is the 53rd time the historic Long Grove Bridge has been hit since 2018, and the fourth time the bridge was hit by a vehicle since the start of 2024.

According to stories in the Lake McHenry County Scanner, a large vehicle either hit or became wedged under the bridge on February 5, April 26, and April 28, 2024.

The bridge, formerly known as the Long Grove Covered Bridge, was renamed in September 2022 to the Robert Parker Coffin Bridge after Robert Parker Coffin, who designed the bridge cover.

The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“There are numerous signs informing drivers of the height restriction and signs prohibiting trucks and busses from using the bridge,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli previously said.
