A 5-year-old child was rushed to the hospital in serious condition after nearly drowning in an outdoor swimming pool of a Gurnee apartment complex Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded at 4:59 p.m. Thursday to the Northlake Farms Apartments, 6700 Derby Drive in Gurnee, for a report of a child that nearly drowned at the outdoor swimming pool.

The child was reportedly found in the pool and CPR was administered before emergency responders arrived, according to fire department radio traffic.

Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Heraver told Lake & McHenry County Scanner that firefighter/paramedics arrived on the scene in around three minutes and found the child – who he said is 5 years old – was out of the pool.

Paramedics immediately administered advanced life-saving measures and transported the child, who was still alive, to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in serious condition, Heraver said.
