The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Lake and McHenry counties until 8 p.m. Sunday.
The storms are capable of producing tornadoes, isolated hail up to ping-pong sized, and damaging winds with gusts up to 70mph, weather officials said.
The severe thunderstorm watch is for Lake, McHenry, and various other northern Illinois counties including Cook, Rockford, DeKalb, Kankakee, DuPage and others.
The watch also extends into southern Wisconsin and northwest Indiana.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to sweep from the west with frequent lightning and a potential for localized flash flooding.
