Authorities are investigating skeletal remains found Friday in a wooded area near Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park in Beach Park.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said Zion Police received an anonymous tip on June 14 that human remains were located in a wooded area on Sheridan and Wadsworth roads near the entrance of the Illinois Beach State Park.
Zion Police searched and located the skeletal remains, Covelli said, then contacted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office because it was in their jurisdiction.
Covelli said the Lake County Coroner’s Office took possession of the remains Friday.
Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton said an autopsy conducted showed no identified skeletal injuries.
He added the remains appear to have been there for a few weeks and were located just outside of a tent.
His office plans to conduct further anthropology studies on the remains later this week to try and identify the person, Newton said.
Covelli said the identity, cause, and manner of death remain unknown.
The incident is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
