No injuries were reported after a school bus was destroyed when it became fully engulfed in flames in Gurnee Monday morning, fire officials said.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 10:10 a.m. Monday to the area of Stearns School Road and Dilleys Road for a report of a vehicle fire.
Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief James Pellitteri said crews arrived on the scene to find a school bus on fire.
The bus was fully involved in flames and no one was on the bus, which was stopped on Dilleys Road near Westminster Lane.
The bus driver had been driving down the road when she noticed something was wrong, Pellitteri said.
She pulled the bus over to the side of the road and a puff of smoke was seen before the fire erupted.
Pellitteri said the bus driver was able to escape safely. She was evaluated by paramedics and was uninjured.
No children were on the bus at the time of the incident.
Firefighters connected to a nearby fire hydrant and used hose lines to extinguish the fire.
The northbound lane of Dilleys Road north of Stearns School Road was shut down for approximately an hour, Pellitteri said.
The bus was deemed a complete loss and was towed away from the scene.
The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation by the Gurnee Fire Department.
