A 16-year-old boy was arrested after police say he fatally shot a 24-year-old man from Algonquin in self-defense during an altercation in Elgin.
The Elgin Police Department responded around 11:36 p.m. on June 16 to the 600 block of Villa Street for a report of a shooting.
Officers arrived on the scene and located an adult male with serious injuries from being shot.
The man was transported to an area hospital and later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said the man died in the hospital in the afternoon on June 18.
He was identified as Kevin Ambriz, 24, of Algonquin.
Ambriz died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner’s office said.
Detectives from the police department’s Major Investigations Division began an investigation.
Police officials said the investigation showed that an altercation ensued between Ambriz and a 16-year-old boy.
Ambriz displayed a knife during the altercation and the juvenile fired a gun at Ambriz, striking him, according to police.
The juvenile was arrested last Tuesday by the Major Investigations Division without incident.
The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office was notified and reviewed the facts of the case.
They determined the shooting to be in self-defense and approved charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, a Class 3 felony, and three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a Class 4 felony.
The juvenile was transported to the Kane County Youth Home.
An obituary for Ambriz said a visitation will be held at Dundee Funeral Home in East Dundee from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday. Burial services will be held on Wednesday at the Algonquin Cemetery.
