An alleged intoxicated driver was arrested and released after police say he was involved in a crash that resulted in a victim being flown to the hospital with serious injuries in McHenry.
The incident happened around 10:55 p.m. on June 15 at Route 31 and Charles J. Miller Parkway in McHenry.
McHenry Police Department Public Affairs Officer Ashley O’Herron said two vehicles were involved in the crash.
Richard Molina, 44, of Chicago, was driving a vehicle northbound on Route 31, O’Herron said.
A second vehicle was traveling southbound on Route 31 turning eastbound onto Charles J. Miller Parkway.
O’Herron said the two vehicles collided in the intersection. An investigation showed Molina was driving under the influence.
A passenger in one of the cars had to be extricated by firefighters.
They were transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry where being flown to a trauma hospital for treatment.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said the victim suffered great bodily harm or permanent disfigurement.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and Molina was charged with aggravated driving under the influence resulting in great bodily harm, driving under the influence of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and disregarding a traffic control device.
The McHenry County Regional Crash Assistance Team was called to the scene to conduct an investigation, which remains ongoing, O’Herron said.
Molina was arrested and transported to the McHenry County Jail. The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain him pending trial.
McHenry County Judge Carl Metz denied the petition and released Molina from custody.
He ordered Molina to only drive a motor vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device and refrain from consuming alcohol. Molina was also ordered to obtain a substance abuse evaluation.
A status of preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16.
