A 20-year-old man died this weekend from drowning after he was found unresponsive in a pool at an apartment complex in Waukegan, officials said.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 4:20 p.m. Saturday to the Kings Court Apartments in the 2800 block of West Grandville Avenue.
LaMarion Stanley, 20, of Waukegan, was pulled from the apartment’s pool and found unresponsive.
Stanley had gone under the water and did not resurface. He was under the water for over 15 minutes.
Police officers began performing lifesaving measures on the man until paramedics arrived.
Stanley was rushed to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was in critical condition.
He was stabilized and transferred to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Stanley was declared brain dead and taken off life support on Sunday.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified by the hospital of the death around 5 p.m.
The coroner’s office said a preliminary investigation, including a review of medical records, showed the death appeared to be consistent with drowning.
The family said in a statement to Lake and McHenry County Scanner that Stanley worked as a live-in caregiver for his mother and also worked in construction and landscaping.
He had graduated school from YouthBuild where he continued to be an outspoken person for other youths, the statement said.
“Overall he was a smart young man that had bigger goals than the world could handle. He loved to tell jokes and make everyone smile even when times were hard for everyone around him,” the statement said.
Stanley’s mother and siblings created a GoFundMe account to help raise money for funeral expenses. The account has raised almost $1,000.
A funeral service organized by Westgate Funeral Home is set for July 18.
