A wanted suspect fleeing from police tried to escape by jumping into the Fox River in Johnsburg, only to be pulled from the water by officers who were aided by a resident and her inflatable boat.
The Johnsburg Police Department responded around 3:30 p.m. Friday to the 900 block of West River Terrace for a report of a person with an active arrest warrant.
Johnsburg Interim Police Chief Jason Greenwald said officers were directed to the 1000 block of West River Terrace where the subject was last seen walking.
Officers attempted to make contact and the subject, Riley T. Fisher, 20, of Johnsburg, fled on foot while ignoring officers.
Fisher jumped into the Fox River in an attempt to escape.
The McHenry Fire Protection District, Fox Lake Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit were notified and began responding.
Greenwald said a citizen aided police by bringing an officer out on her personal watercraft to pull Fisher out of the water.
The woman who aided officers told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that she took them out on her “janky” two-stroke boat after seeing the man run from officers in front of her home.
Fisher was transported to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.
He was released on Saturday and taken into custody on the arrest warrant, Greenwald said.
The warrant stemmed from a domestic battery incident that occurred on June 16 in the 900 block of West River Terrace.
A criminal complaint said Fisher got into an argument with a family member, broke multiple glass bottles and made physical contact with two family members, leaving them with minor injuries.
Fisher was transported to the McHenry County Jail where he was released pending trial.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on August 28 for a plea hearing.
