Robert S. Caldwell, 38, of Wonder Lake.

Court documents say a man angered by text messages sent to his wife tracked down the elderly man who sent them and attacked him, leaving him seriously injured in Woodstock.

Robert S. Caldwell, 38, of Wonder Lake, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, aggravated battery to a victim over 60 and aggravated battery in a public place.

Court documents said Caldwell reportedly found out about text messages sent to his wife by another man.

Caldwell tracked down the man, who is over 60 years old, and battered him, according to court documents.

The attack, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. last Thursday in Woodstock, was witnessed by a juvenile.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said the victim suffered great bodily harm.

The complaint said Caldwell struck the victim’s jaw with a closed fist, causing him to lose consciousness and fall backward onto the pavement.

The victim struck his head on the pavement, which resulted in brain bleeding.

The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Caldwell pending trial.

McHenry County Judge Carl Metz granted the petition and said there were no conditions of release that could mitigate the real and present threat that Caldwell poses.

The judge also noted the allegations are vicious and Caldwell has a lengthy nine-page criminal history.

Caldwell, who is being held in the McHenry County Jail, is scheduled to appear in court again on July 10.
