A suspicious package led to the response of a bomb squad and the evacuation of the Community Days festival in Mundelein Friday morning, authorities said.

The Mundelein Police Department said a patron of Community Days alerted them to a suspicious package.

“Out of an abundance of caution the grounds were evacuated,” the police department said.

A specialty unit was called to the scene and confirmed the package was harmless.

The entire festival grounds were searched to ensure there was nothing else suspicious, police said.

“The police department would like to thank the individual who reported the item,” the department said.

Police say they continue to encourage everyone to be alert of their surroundings and to immediately report anything they find suspicious to a staff member.

The festival has since reopened to the public. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we worked through this situation,” police said.
