Police say a Round Lake Beach man was shot during a possible shootout that resulted in over a dozen rounds being fired in North Chicago Friday morning.

The North Chicago Police Department responded around 2:36 a.m. Friday to the 1700 block of Victoria Avenue in North Chicago for a report of shots fired.

North Chicago Police Department Management Analyst Freddrick Diez said officers received a ShotSpotter notification, which is a gunshot audio detection system, for 16 rounds fired in the area.

Officers arrived and located a 39-year-old Round Lake Beach man who was walking towards the scene.

The 39-year-old man had suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper left hip with no exit point, Diez said.

The North Chicago Fire Department was requested to the scene.

Witnesses told officers that they heard gunshots and then return fire was heard.

“This incident is an active investigation that appears to be an isolated event, reassuring the community that their safety is not compromised,” Diez said.
