No injuries were reported after a two-car garage caught on fire, sending heavy smoke and flames from the structure, in Zion Saturday afternoon.
The Zion Fire Rescue Department responded around 1:48 p.m. Saturday to the 2900 block of Ezra Avenue in Zion for a report of a structure fire.
Zion Fire Rescue Department Battalion Chief Rocco Campanella said fire crews were already near the scene when the call came out because they had been returning from other emergency calls.
Firefighters arrived to find a two-car garage that had heavy smoke coming from the eaves and doors.
Flames soon could be seen coming from the roof, Campanella said.
The incident was upgraded to bring additional fire departments to the scene and to cover Zion fire stations.
The Newport, Beach Park, Winthrop Harbor and Gurnee fire departments were called to the scene.
Firefighters operated two hose lines to bring the fire under control in five minutes, Campanella said.
The homeowner was at the scene and was uninjured. No firefighters were injured.
The Zion Emergency Services and Disaster Agency also responded to the scene to provide refreshments to firefighters who were working in the hot temperatures.
Campanella said the garage was used for storage and no cars were inside. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known and remains under investigation.
