The National Weather Service said strong to severe storms are expected later Sunday in the Chicagoland area, with “all severe hazards” being possible.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook Sunday for Lake, McHenry, Boone, Winnebago, Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.

The outlook says a round of strong to severe thunderstorms will move across the northern Illinois area late Sunday afternoon through the evening. “All severe hazards are possible.”

Damaging winds are expected to be the primary severe hazard, while large hail and tornadoes will also be possible, the outlook said.

Torrential downpours could produce flash flooding. All thunderstorms will produce ponding on roadways and inundate poor drainage areas.

Heat indices will likely near or exceed 100 degrees Sunday afternoon, the NWS said.

Multiple rounds of storms are expected over the next few days, including Monday when an additional round of severe thunderstorms are possible.

The NWS said the severe weather threat for Monday is a three on a scale of 0-5.

Forecasters said they recommend residents have multiple ways to get weather warnings and take cover if one is issued.
