Officers arrested a 23-year-old man after they spotted him allegedly flash a gun during the Scoop the Loop event in downtown Waukegan Friday evening.

Juan C. Mascorro, 23, of Waukegan, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Waukegan police officers were stationed along the route for Scoop the Loop in downtown Waukegan around 7 p.m. Friday, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Lauren Kalcheim-Rothenberg.

Officers spotted a man riding on a motorcyclist who appeared to have flashed a weapon, Kalcheim-Rothenberg said.

Officers stopped the motorcyclist, later identified as Mascorro, and searched him.

They found Mascorro was in possession of a Glock 27 handgun in his waistband, Kalcheim-Rothenberg said.

Prosecutors did not say if Mascorro flashed the gun at someone in particular or was only handling the gun.

Kalcheim-Rothenberg said Mascorro does not have a valid Firearm Owner’s identification card or concealed carry license.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Mascorro pending trial, calling him a real and present danger to the community.

Lake County Judge Ruth Lofthouse ordered Mascorro held in custody until a detention hearing, which she scheduled for Monday afternoon.
