A teenager has been sentenced to probation for driving drugged and recklessly when he caused a rollover crash that left four other teenagers hospitalized near Huntley.
Dylan J. O’Boyle, 18, of Algonquin, was charged in March 2023 with aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm, aggravated reckless driving causing great bodily harm, cannabis concentration within two hours of driving, possession of alcohol by a minor, unlawful possession of cannabis, driving too fast for conditions, graduated driving license violation and passing in a no-passing zone.
The charges stem from a single-vehicle crash that the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Huntley Fire Protection District responded to around 8:56 p.m. on January 21, 2023, in the 11100 block of Conley Road in unincorporated Huntley.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find a single-vehicle rollover crash off the roadway east of Route 47.
An investigation showed that a 2013 Infiniti G37, driven by O’Boyle, was traveling westbound on Conley Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
O’Boyle attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone, the sheriff’s office and court records said.
The Infiniti left the roadway to the north and rolled over, crashing through a fence and into a field.
The vehicle landed upright in the field after rolling over.
The passengers in the car included a 16-year-old Dundee area boy, a 16-year-old Carpentersville boy, a 17-year-old Algonquin girl and an 18-year-old Carpentersville woman.
O’Boyle and all four passengers were transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley and Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Woodstock.
The 17-year-old girl, who suffered great bodily harm, was later transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where was listed in serious condition, the sheriff’s office said.
The other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The Lakewood Police Department, Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and Woodstock Fire Rescue District assisted at the scene.
A criminal complaint said O’Boyle was under the influence of cannabis and had a “willful and wanton disregard” for the safety of others.
O’Boyle, who was a juvenile at the time but charged as an adult, was found in possession of numerous small bottles of alcohol, the complaint said.
The complaint said O’Boyle was also violating his graduated driver’s license by having more than one passenger under the age of 20 in the car.
O’Boyle illegally passed in a no-passing zone and drove too fast for conditions, the complaint added.
Court records show O’Boyle entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office this week.
He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in great bodily harm, a Class 4 felony, in exchange for the rest of his charges being dismissed.
McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt accepted the plea and sentenced O’Boyle on Friday to two years of probation, 480 hours of public service and alcohol and drug addiction treatment.
O’Boyle was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution and almost $3,000 in court fines and fees. He was also ordered to attend a victim impact panel.
