A police officer was injured while aiding firefighters in rescuing a dog from a townhome fire in Lake Forest, fire officials said.

The Lake Forest Fire Department and Lake Forest Police Department responded around 3:22 p.m. Sunday to the 40 block of South Maywood Road for a report of a structure fire.

Lake Forest Fire Department Battalion Chief Andrew Allan said responding crews were advised that flames were visible from the windows of the home.

The response was upgraded to a confirmed fire to bring additional firefighters to the scene.

Fire crews arrived to find smoke in one of the units of the duplex, Allan said.

Firefighters made entry and quickly extinguished the fire in the kitchen.

Police assisted firefighters in rescuing the homeowner’s dog during an initial search of the building.

Firefighters performed overhaul operations to ensure complete extinguishment of the fire, Allan said.

Lake Forest was assisted by fire departments from Lincolnshire, Lake Bluff, Wheeling and North Chicago.

A police officer was treated for smoke inhalation and later released. There were no other injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lake Forest Fire Department.
