An unfounded report of a man with a gun prompted a large police response at a Buffalo Grove hotel but led officers to arrest a man for allegedly attacking his wife.
The Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 8 p.m. Friday to the Extended Stay America, 1525 Busch Parkway, for a report of a dispute.
Buffalo Grove Deputy Police Chief Brian Spolar said the 911 caller reported a weapon may be involved, which resulted in a large police response.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department also responded to standby.
Officers arrested Nathan Orlowski, 29, who has no permanent address, and he was charged with two counts of domestic battery.
Officers also later learned through their investigation that there were no weapons involved.
The incident was a physical domestic between Orlowski and his wife, Spolar said.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen McConnell said Orlowski was the one who made the 911 call and reported a Hispanic man armed with a gun was beating him up.
The Hispanic man was actually a witness who had intervened to stop Orlowski from battering Orlowski’s wife, McConnell said.
The witness was searched and had no weapons. He told officers he was walking his dog around the hotel when he saw Orlowski push the female victim hard against a wall and slap her.
McConnell said the witness physically intervened to aid the victim.
The victim told officers that Orlowski pushed her and slapped her all over her body, McConnell said.
A second witness corroborated the first witness’ report and the victim’s report.
She also told officers that Orlowski had previously repeatedly abused her and she was scared for her life, McConnell said.
The victim said Orlowski previously carved his initials into her back with a knife during a separate incident. A knife was recovered from Orlowski’s hotel room.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Orlowski pending trial, calling him a real and present threat to the safety of the victim.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak granted the petition and remanded Orlowski to the Lake County Jail, saying he needed to protect the safety of the victim.
Orlowski is scheduled to appear in court again on August 7 for a status of attorney hearing.
