A Mundelein man was arrested following a months-long investigation where he was accused of selling over 1,300 fentanyl pills during undercover stings in Lake County.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group (SIG) recently concluded an investigation into Alejandro I. Dominguez, 42, of Mundelein.

The SIG is made up of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Highland Park Police, Park City Police, Round Lake Beach Police, Round Lake Park Police, Round Lake Police, Wauconda Police, Waukegan Police, Winthrop Harbor Police and Zion Police.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said SIG had received information that Dominguez was selling cocaine and pills laced with fentanyl.

SIG detectives initiated an undercover operation that spanned several months.

Prosecutors said numerous controlled buys were conducted from April 2023 to October 2023.

Undercover detectives recovered over 1,300 pills laced with fentanyl along with over 30 grams of cocaine during their investigation, Covelli said.

SIG detectives took Dominguez into custody without incident on Thursday while conducting surveillance on him outside his home, prosecutors said.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved 10 counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and 10 counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Dominguez in custody while awaiting trial.

Dominguez appeared in First Appearance Court Friday morning and Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered him held in the Lake County Jail until a detention hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

“We have witnessed the terrible effects that fentanyl has in our community. As your Sheriff, I will continue to make it a priority to arrest those who traffic deadly drugs into our community,” Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said.
