HazMat teams from Lake and McHenry counties are actively investigating a substantial fuel leak that resulted in gasoline traveling into the sewer in downtown Hebron.
The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection responded around 11 a.m. Monday to the Fast Stop gas station, 10010 Main Street in Hebron, for a report of a hazardous conditions incident.
Fire officials said crews remain on the scene as of 3:30 p.m. actively investigating the incident, which involved a “substantial” gasoline leak.
An undetermined amount of fuel traveled into the storm sewers near the intersection of Route 47 and Route 173, causing a potential environmental hazard, fire officials said.
Hazardous materials (HazMat) teams from across Lake and McHenry counties are on the scene working to mitigate the spill.
There are no impacts on the village’s drinking water at this time, fire officials said.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been notified.
“We kindly ask you to avoid the area until further notice. More information will be forthcoming,” fire officials said.
Route 173, also known as Maple Street, is shut down between St. Albans Street and Route 47.
