A Round Lake Beach police officer was charged after he allegedly struck a woman in the face during an off-duty incident in Antioch, court records show.

Jose R. Barrera, 31, of Antioch, was charged with one count of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

Charging documents filed in Lake County Circuit Court said Barrera made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with a woman on June 5 in Antioch.

The documents said Barrera struck the woman, a family or household member, in the face.

The Round Lake Beach Police Department told Lake and McHenry County Scanner in a statement on Monday that they were notified on June 5 that the incident was under investigation by the Antioch Police Department.

Barrera is a police officer for Round Lake Beach and was most recently listed as a detective in the department.

The incident happened while he was off-duty, police officials said.

Round Lake Beach Police Chief Wayne Wilde placed Barrera on desk duty pending the results of the investigation.

Wilde was notified on June 26 that Barrera had been charged after the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case.

Barrera was placed on unpaid administrative leave and will remain on leave pending the results of a Round Lake Beach internal administrative review and the criminal court proceedings.

“The Round Lake Beach Police Department and Round Lake Beach Village Administration has and will remain cooperative with the Antioch Police Department and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office throughout this investigation,” police officials said.

“This is the only information Round Lake Beach will provide due to the pending investigation and ongoing court case,” the statement said.

Barrera appeared for a First Appearance Court hearing earlier this month.

The state’s attorney’s office did not file a petition to detain Barrera pending trial.

A judge released Barrera from custody and ordered him to have no contact with the victim or her residence. The judge also said Barrera could only possess a weapon for work purposes.

Barrera is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday for a hearing on a motion.
