One person was transported to the hospital after a car struck a Metra train in Grayslake and damaged a railroad crossing arm, resulting in delays late Tuesday afternoon.
The Grayslake Police Department, Metra Police Department and Grayslake Fire Protection District responded around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Route 83 and Route 137.
Emergency crews arrived to find a white Honda sedan that had struck a Metra commuter train at the railroad crossing south of the intersection on Route 83.
One person from the Honda suffered injuries to their head and arm.
They were transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Heavy damage was reported to the front end of the Honda. No injuries were reported on the train.
The Honda struck the side of the third train car while the train, which had passengers onboard, was passing the crossing, according to a worker on the train.
The Honda came to rest off of the train tracks and damaged the railroad crossing gate arm.
Metra reported the incident involved outbound Train 2121, which was scheduled to arrive at Fox Lake at 4:06 p.m.
That train as well as other trains in the area were already delayed to due freight train interference.
Inbound and outbound trains were experiencing additional delays following the crash.
Metra crews were on the scene working to repair the railroad crossing gate arm Tuesday evening.
A tow truck removed the damaged Honda from the scene by 6 p.m.
