A resident was injured while trying to rescue a dog from her house that caught on fire near Mundelein Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Countryside Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 19400 block of West Krueger Court in unincorporated Mundelein for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from a two-story single-family residence, according to Countryside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Kevin Wodrich.

Firefighters deployed two hose lines, one to the front of the home and one to the back of the home, to extinguish the fire.

Wodrich said rural water operations were established due to no fire hydrants in the area.

It took crews approximately 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Approximately 3,000 gallons of water were used.

A resident was home at the time of the fire, Wodrich said. She went back inside the residence to try and rescue a dog.

It was learned that the dog had escaped the house on its own.

The woman suffered minor smoke inhalation and was checked by an ambulance crew, Wodrich said. No other injuries were reported.

The Countryside Fire Protection District was assisted by the Mundelein, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Lake Forest, Highland Park, Barrington-Countryside, Wauconda, Deerfield, Palatine, Buffalo Grove and Lake Bluff fire departments.

“Working smoke detectors save lives. Test them when you change your clocks,” the fire district said in a safety message to the public after the incident.

The cause of the fire, which started in the kitchen, is still under investigation.
