Police say a 19-year-old man was found in Waukegan with a gunshot wound after he was shot by a gunman nearby in North Chicago Thursday evening.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 11:40 p.m. Thursday to the 600 block of South Jackson Street in Waukegan for a report of a person shot.

Paramedics and officers discovered a victim who had been shot once in the lower leg.

The North Chicago Police Department, minutes earlier, responded to a ShotSpotter notification around 11:31 p.m. in the area of 11th Street and Jackson Street, according to North Chicago Police Department Management Analyst Freddrick Diez.

The ShotSpotter alert reported that a single shot had been fired near the intersection.

It was learned that the victim had been shot in North Chicago before an ambulance was called for him at the Waukegan residence.

Diez said the 19-year-old Waukegan man had suffered a gunshot wound in the right calf. The bullet had entered and exited his leg.

Paramedics transported him to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim had been walking westbound on 11th Street in North Chicago at the time of the shooting, Diez said.

Witnesses described the offenders as two male subjects, possibly in their late teens or slightly older, wearing black and gray hooded sweatshirts.

Diez said the investigation remains active and the incident appears to be isolated with no threat to the public.
