The sheriff’s office says a 24-year-old woman suffered critical, life-threatening injuries after a driver attempted to make a U-turn and caused a two-vehicle crash near Wadsworth.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Newport Township Fire Protection District responded around 10:15 a.m. Saturday to the area of Interstate 94 and Russell Road in unincorporated Wadsworth for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said deputies arrived to find two vehicles involved with major damage near Russell Road and Frontage Road.

A preliminary investigation shows a Chrysler 300, driven by a 21-year-old Zion man, was traveling eastbound on Russell Road just west of Frontage Road.

A Mitsubishi Outlander, driven by a 27-year-old Schaumburg man, turned in front of the Chrysler and quickly attempted to make a U-turn, Covelli said.

The driver of the Chrysler struck the Mitsubishi as the Mitsubishi’s driver attempted to make the U-turn.

A passenger in the Mitsubishi, a 24-year-old Schaumburg woman, sustained major injuries in the crash.

Covelli said she was transported to St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, with critical, life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was transported to St. Catherine’s Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Chrysler was uninjured, Covelli said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
