Firefighters aided two people who were stranded on a boat on Lake Michigan near Highland Park after their vessel lost power and began drifting away, fire officials said.
The Highland Park Fire Department responded around 8 p.m. Sunday to the Park Avenue Boat Ramp, 31 Park Avenue in Highland Park, for a report of a water rescue.
Highland Park Fire Department Deputy Chief Frank Nardomarino said crews received a report of a boat in distress on Lake Michigan.
Two people onboard the boat, which had its engine cut off and was floating away, were in contact with family members who were at the Park Avenue Boat Ramp.
The family called 911 and fire crews launched their fire boat onto Lake Michigan, Nardomarino said.
Firefighters located the boat in distress, which had lost power, approximately a half-mile north of the launch point near the Highwood water plant.
Nardomarino said neither of the boat occupants was injured. The fire boat towed the broken-down boat back to the Park Avenue Boat Ramp.
Fire crews assisted with getting the broken-down boat back onto the family’s trailer, Nardomarino said.
Firefighters cleared the scene approximately an hour after receiving the call.
