A 39-year-old man died after he was struck by a car while apparently attempting to cross Route 12 near Wauconda Wednesday evening, the sheriff said.
The Wauconda Fire District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Route 12 and Old Rand Road in unincorporated Wauconda for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a 39-year-old Arlington Heights man who was critically injured without a pulse, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
A sheriff’s deputy performed CPR on the man and the man regained a pulse.
He was transported by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital where he died from his injuries, Covelli said.
A preliminary investigation shows a Toyota Camry, driven by a 68-year-old McHenry man, was traveling northbound on Route 12.
As the Toyota was traveling northbound, it appeared the pedestrian was attempting to cross Route 12 on foot, Covelli said.
The driver of the Toyota did not see the man and struck him as he drove northbound.
The driver of the Toyota, who remained at the scene, was uninjured. The Toyota’s front windshield sustained damage from the impact.
Covelli said it is unknown why the pedestrian was crossing Route 12. The incident happened in front of J&D’s Bar and Grill.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is expected to perform an autopsy on the victim on Thursday morning.
The coroner’s office is withholding the man’s name until after the autopsy.
The northbound lanes of Route 12 at Old McHenry Road were shut down for several hours during the crash investigation.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
