The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is investigating after a gunman opened fire on an apartment building and fatally shot a 39-year-old man in Zion early Friday morning.
The Zion Police Department responded around 2:40 a.m. Friday to an apartment building in the 2900 block of Elizabeth Avenue in Zion for a report of shots fired.
Police officers arrived and located a gunshot victim inside an apartment, according to Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli.
Lifesaving efforts were performed by police officers and Zion Fire/Rescue Department paramedics on the 39-year-old man.
The man was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
A preliminary investigation shows the home was likely the intended target of the shooting, Covelli said.
The victim, a Zion resident, was struck by the rounds fired by the offender, who shot from outside the home.
The Zion Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force with the investigation.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office scheduled an autopsy on the victim for Friday morning.
The identity of the man, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, is being withheld until after the autopsy.
Major Crime Task Force investigators and Zion police detectives continue to actively investigate the homicide, Covelli said.
