Lake Forest has hired the Barrington police chief, who has over 26 years of law enforcement experience, to lead its police department as the new chief of police.
The City of Lake Forest announced the hiring on Friday of John Burke following a nationwide search.
Burke currently serves as the chief of police at the Barrington Police Department and has over 26 years of law enforcement experience. Burke was appointed as the Barrington police chief in April.
Officials said Burke has demonstrated leadership skills in various roles with the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services Team over the last 19 years.
“Lake Forest is excited to welcome John Burke as the next Chief of Police,” City Manager Jason Wicha said.
“While there were many outstanding local and national candidates, John’s extensive leadership experience and emphasis on employee growth and training will continue the tradition of integrity and service in the Lake Forest Police Department,” Wicha said.
Burke’s education and training include a Master’s degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University and a Bachelor’s degree in History from Illinois State University.
He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2024 and Northwestern University Police School of Staff Command in 2013.
“John’s strong commitment to community partnerships and interagency collaboration will further strengthen the department’s relationship with the community,” Lake Forest Mayor Stanford Tack said.
Burke will oversee the Lake Forest Police Department and work closely with the city manager, mayor, city council and other community stakeholders to enforce laws and ensure public safety.
He will also lead the planning, design and construction of the department’s new police station.
“The Lake Forest Police Department has a strong tradition of excellence in policing and community service, and I am committed to continuing and building upon this incredible foundation,” Burke said.
“My foremost priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our community while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity,” Burke said.
“I believe that open communication and collaboration between the police department and residents are essential to achieving this goal. I am eager to meet with my new coworkers, community stakeholders and residents, listen to your concerns, and work together to address any issues we may face,” he added.
The city council will confirm Burke’s appointment at their September 3 meeting.
Burke succeeds former Chief of Police Karl Walldorf, who retired in April after a 30-year career with the city.
