A Beach Park man who forced entry to a gun store and attempted to steal guns from it in Winthrop Harbor has been sentenced to just over 300 days in jail, which is already considered served.

Robert A. Tello, 31, of Beach Park, was charged in October 2023 with burglary, criminal damage to property, possession of burglary tools, two counts of resisting arrest and obstructing identification.

The charges stem from an incident that the Winthrop Harbor Police Department responded to around 12:11 a.m. on October 4, 2023, at The Outdoorsman, 221 Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said at the time that officers arrived to find Tello exiting the gun store after receiving a 911 call for a report of glass shattered.

Tello had a hammer in his waistband. He also had a crowbar and another hammer in a backpack.

Video surveillance showed Tello hammered a window at least 15 times before gaining access, Katris said.

Katris said Tello was seen walking directly to the gun counter but he found the guns were in a secure case.

Tello left the business without stealing anything after being unable to access the guns, Katris said.

Tello refused to give his identity to officers after he was arrested for the burglary, which prompted officers to seek help from federal law enforcement and authorities in Kenosha, Katris said.

Facial recognition software was used to identify him. Tello has been held in the Lake County Jail since his arrest.

Court records show Tello pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of burglary, a Class 2 felony. The rest of the charges were dismissed.

A judge approved the plea deal and sentenced Tello to 307 days in jail pursuant to the plea agreement.

The 307 days are already considered served because Tello received credit for 307 days already served awaiting trial.

Tello will be on probation for 24 months and was ordered to pay $2,265 in restitution. He was also ordered to not consume alcohol or drugs and not possess firearms, among other conditions.
