Daniel M. Schlinder, 40, of McHenry.

Officials say a police canine located over 30 baggies of cocaine hidden in a false compartment of a caulking tube in a vehicle parked at a gas station in Volo.

Daniel M. Schlinder, 40, of McHenry, was charged with manufacturing or delivery of 15-100 grams of cocaine, a Class X felony, and one count of possession of 15-100 grams of cocaine, a Class 1 felony.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Vukovich said a Lake County sheriff’s deputy was fueling his squad on July 31 in Volo.

The deputy spotted a Chevrolet Suburban that he recognized belonging to Schlinder from previous encounters.

The deputy learned Schlinder had an active warrant for drug offenses out of McHenry County, Vukovich said.

Schlinder was gambling inside the Speedway at Route 12 and Volo Village Road in Volo at the time.

A police canine unit was called to the scene and performed an open-air sniff on the vehicle, Vukovich said.

The canine alerted to the presence of drugs inside the Chevrolet.

Vukovich said deputies located a caulking gun with a false compartment in the silicone tube.

31 individual baggies of a rock-like substance, weighing 20 grams, that field tested positive for cocaine were located inside the tube.

Schlinder’s girlfriend told deputies that Schlinder sells drugs for money, Vukovich said.

Vukovich said Schlinder admitted that everything in the vehicle belonged to him.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Schlinder held in the Lake County Jail pending trial after prosecutors filed a petition to detain him.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 27.
