Police say a Grayslake woman died after she pulled out in front of a semi-truck, resulting in a crash on Route 41 in Gurnee that left her trapped in her car Tuesday morning.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Route 41 and Delany Road for a report of a serious traffic crash.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said the incident involved a semi-truck and a Honda sedan.
A preliminary investigation showed that the Honda was traveling southbound on Route 41 in the left turn lane for northbound Delany Road.
The Honda, for unknown reasons, exited the turn lane and entered the southbound lanes of Route 41, Gaylor said.
The Honda was struck by the semi-truck, which was traveling southbound, pushing the Honda through the intersection and into a pole.
The Gurnee Fire Department worked to extricate the driver of the Honda, a 63-year-old Grayslake woman, who was trapped inside the car, Gaylor said.
She was rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of her critical injuries.
Gaylor said the woman was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to assist with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Southbound Route 41 was shut down for several hours during the investigation.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is in the process of scheduling an autopsy on the victim, whose identity has not been released yet.
