Bystanders helped free a driver from his dump truck after it rolled over and leaked a significant amount of fuel, causing a hazardous materials incident, on Route 31 near Richmond.

The Richmond Township Fire Protection District responded around 5:13 p.m. Tuesday to Route 31 and West Solon Road in unincorporated Richmond for a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment.

Fire crews arrived on the scene in six minutes to find a dump truck with a trailer and other road equipment that had been involved in a crash with a pickup truck, fire officials said.

The dump truck and trailer had rolled over into the Richmond Township Road District parking lot from southbound Route 31.

The crash resulted in a significant fuel leak from the truck.

The pickup truck involved had sustained minor damage from the incident, fire officials said.

The driver of the dump truck was out of the cab and walking. He was evaluated and declined transport to the hospital.

The man had been removed from the cab of the truck by bystanders before the fire department arrived.

The occupants of the pickup were still in their vehicle. They were assessed and declined transport to the hospital.

The incident was upgraded through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to the box alarm level due to the fuel spill, fire officials said.

Numerous fire departments from throughout McHenry County responded to the call.

The fuel spill was mitigated and the MABAS alarm was struck out.

Fire officials said the cleanup of the scene was conducted by a private towing agency and assisted by the Richmond Township Road District.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash. The Richmond Police Department assisted with traffic control.

Route 31 from Harts Road to Tryon Grove Road was shut down during the incident. It was reopened just before 9 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
