Police say they have cited a driver who caused a four-vehicle crash that left two children seriously injured and also left a third child and their mother injured in Algonquin.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Randall Road and Corporate Parkway for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Chris Bremner said crews arrived to find a four-vehicle crash with heavy damage.

The incident occurred in the northbound lanes on Randall Road just south of Corporate Parkway.

Bremner said the crash appeared to be a chain reaction rear-end style collision, which involved passenger cars.

Firefighters used extrication equipment to open a door to one of the vehicles to remove two juveniles, Bremner said.

A total of four ambulances, including from Huntley and Carpentersville, were called to the scene.

Algonquin Police Officer David Gough said a 39-year-old woman and her three sons, ages 9, 10 and 14, occupied the vehicle that firefighters performed extrication on.

Their vehicle was rear-ended by an 18-year-old male driver, who was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Investigators believe the 18-year-old driver who caused the crash was speeding and/or distracted as there was no evidence to indicate he braked before crashing into the stopped vehicle, Gough said.

Gough said the 9-year-old boy and 14-year-old boy both suffered serious injuries later determined to be non-life-threatening.

The 9-year-old, who was trapped and had to be extricated from the car, sustained an injury requiring surgery, Gough said.

The 10-year-old boy and the 39-year-old woman were among the two others transported to the hospital.
