A man who pleaded guilty in connection with a shootout where nearly 60 rounds were fired and two women were seriously wounded in Waukegan has been sentenced to four years in prison.

The shooting occurred around 6:15 p.m. on August 23, 2023, at the Citgo gas station, 1005 Golf Road in Waukegan.

Officers arrived and learned two victims had been shot and were already at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

Officers arrived at the hospital to find one of the female victims had driven her own car to the hospital.

She had suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to surgery, a police report said.

The second female victim had been driven to the hospital and dropped off.

She was found by officers outside of the hospital lying on the ground, the report said.

She was transferred to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for surgery and admitted to the intensive care unit.

Waukegan Sixth Ward Alderman Keith Turner, whose ward the shooting occurred in, said at least 57 shots were fired in the shooting.

Several residences were also struck by the gunfire, Turner said. At least two cars were also hit.

DeShawn L. Boyd, 29, of Grayslake, and Jonathan M. Cunningham, 20, whose last known address is unknown, were both charged in early September 2023 with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

Boyd was additionally charged with armed habitual criminal. The two men were arrested in October 2023.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said during a court hearing that Boyd and Cunningham were with several others, including the two female victims, hanging out at the gas station.

Four masked suspects arrived 20 minutes later and shot at the group, wounding the two women.

Surveillance video showed a white sedan park and then the four suspects walked toward the Citgo before opening fire, Katris said.

The four suspects ran back to their car and began driving away.

Katris said Boyd and Cunningham ran toward Linden Avenue, brandished firearms and began firing at the vehicle.

Boyd and Cunningham fired the shots “well after” the suspect vehicle had left the gas station and was far down the residential street, Katris said.

Katris said the video surveillance showed Boyd and Cunningham were not in immediate danger when they fired the shots.

The two men are also convicted felons and are not allowed to possess guns. Boyd and Cunningham were both ordered held in the Lake County Jail pending trial following their arrests.

Court records show Cunningham pleaded guilty last month to one count of felon in possession of a firearm, a Class 3 felony, in exchange for all of his other charges being dismissed.

Cunningham will receive 293 days of credit for time served awaiting trial. IDOC records show he is projected to be paroled from prison on October 6.

Boyd was sentenced in May to nine years in the IDOC after he pleaded guilty to one count of enhanced felon in possession of a firearm, a Class 2 felony.
