Firefighters rescued baby squirrels from a tree after a homeowner discovered that their mother had possibly been hit by a car near Gurnee Saturday afternoon.

The Gurnee Fire Department responded around 12:05 p.m. Saturday to the 18000 block of West Hampshire Drive in unincorporated Gurnee for a citizen assist call.

Village officials said an “incredible homeowner” discovered that a mother squirrel may have been hit by a car.

The homeowner took immediate action to help the abandoned baby squirrels.

The homeowner called the fire department to rescue the tiny survivors from a tree in front of her home.

One baby had already been safely transported to the animal shelter.

Firefighters from Engine 132 used a ground ladder to scale the tree and rescue two more baby squirrels.

The homeowner transported the two others to the animal shelter as well.

“Her compassion and quick thinking are truly inspiring,” village officials said, referring to the homeowner.

“Let’s hope these little ones find the care they need and that the community continues to show such kindness and dedication!”
