A lightning strike was determined to have caused a fire that damaged the roof of a home in Algonquin Friday evening, fire officials said.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 8 p.m. Friday to the 600 block of Greens View Drive in Algonquin for a report of a structure fire.
Fire officials said it was reported that the single-family home had been struck by lightning.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found a small fire coming from the roof of the two-story home.
Fire crews initiated an aggressive fire attack on the structure and located a fire at the peak of the roof near the fireplace.
Fire officials said the fire was brought under control in 15 minutes and additional crews remained on the scene completing overhaul, addressing hotspots and tarping off the damaged area.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District was aided by the Cary Fire Protection District, Huntley Fire Protection District, Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a lightning strike.
The home remains habitable and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
