Police conducting a search warrant in Round Lake found a 55-year-old man illegally possessing 13 guns, including six rifles, along with over 7,000 rounds of ammunition, prosecutors said.
Rene Jimenez, 55, of Round Lake, was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm with a revoked FOID, a Class 3 felony.
A Lake County judge on August 5 granted an order of protection where Jimenez was the respondent and his soon-to-be ex-wife was the petitioner.
The judge also granted a firearms restraining order against Jimenez and a warrant authorizing a search of his home and car.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Nicholas Shepherd said the Round Lake Police Department executed the warrants that morning in the 400 block of West Sweet Clover Road in Round Lake.
Officers seized six rifles and seven handguns, Shepherd said. Approximately 7,200 rounds of mixed calibers of ammunition were also seized.
Jimenez’s Firearms Owner’s Identification card (FOID) and concealed carry license were previously revoked and he is also on probation for domestic battery, Shepherd said.
He pleaded guilty in June to the offense and was ordered to not possess any firearms or dangerous weapons.
A public safety report from pre-trial court services showed Jimenez’s FOID was revoked after he was found to be a “clear and present danger,” Shepherd said.
Shepherd said Jimenez has failed to follow court orders and asked the court to detain Jimenez pending trial.
A public defender for Jimenez acknowledged his client is not allowed to possess weapons but said they were found in a gun safe in the home and the man is not a threat.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak granted a petition to detain Jimenez. The judge noted Jimenez’s criminal history and history of order of protections against him.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 3 in the case.
