An elderly man was left with serious injuries after a reported head-on crash on Route 173 near Antioch Thursday evening, fire officials said.

The Antioch Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:30 p.m. Thursday to the area of Route 173 and North 7th Avenue in unincorporated Antioch for a vehicle crash.

Antioch Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Taylor said crews responding were advised that the incident involved a head-on collision.

A second ambulance was requested to the scene due to the nature of the call and the speed of the highway.

Fire crews arrived to find two cars involved with heavy damage sustained to both vehicles, Taylor said.

One of the cars came to rest off the roadway by 5th Avenue and the other was two blocks east at 7th Avenue.

The roadway was shut down while first responders assessed and triaged the people involved.

Both vehicles were only occupied by the drivers, Taylor said.

One of the drivers, an elderly man, was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries. His condition was stabilized.

The elderly man’s vehicle sustained most of the damage in the front engine compartment, Taylor said.

The second driver involved declined transport to the hospital.

Taylor said Antioch Towing responded to tow both vehicles and the roadway was later reopened.

The cause of the crash was being investigated by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
