The sheriff is asking for the public’s help after a 63-year-old man was left in critical condition when a pickup truck struck him in a hit-and-run crash in Long Grove.
The Long Grove Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:15 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 53 west of Robert Park Coffin Road in Long Grove for a crash involving a bicyclist.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said a preliminary investigation shows the bicyclist, a 63-year-old Kildeer man, was traveling south on Route 53 on the shoulder of the roadway.
A gray pickup truck was also traveling south on Route 53 at the same time.
The driver of the pickup truck passed a slower vehicle by driving onto the shoulder and into the grass.
The pickup truck struck the bicyclist as they made the illegal maneuver before continuing southbound on Route 53, Covelli said.
The bicyclist was initially transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights with serious injuries.
He was later transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
He remains in critical condition, Covelli said Friday.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said they are asking those who have a dash camera and traveled on Route 53 between Route 83 and Lake Cook Road in Long Grove from 4:10 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. Sunday to contact them.
Those who have information to aid in the investigation can contact the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team at 847-377-4000.
