A Lake County sheriff’s canine is being credited with tracking down a missing man with cognitive disabilities who left his home on foot in Kenosha County last weekend.
The Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin Police Department said around 9:40 p.m. Sunday that they were actively searching for a 59-year-old man.
The man was last seen around 8 p.m. near the 12100 block of 43rd Avenue in Pleasant Prairie.
The department released a photo of the man and asked the public to contact them if he was spotted.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said one of their canines, Axel, was requested to assist in the search.
The man, who has cognitive disabilities, was last seen leaving his residence on foot.
Axel was able to find the man’s scent and tracked it away from his home toward a set of thick bushes, the sheriff’s office said.
As Axel approached the bushes, Deputy Kevin Gauer, who is the canine’s handler, saw the missing man’s foot sticking out of the bushes.
The missing man was evaluated by paramedics before being brought back home safely.
“Thank you to Lake County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Axel for your assistance!” the Pleasant Prairie Police Department said.
