
Severe thunderstorms, producing up to 70 mph wind gusts and golf ball-sized hail, were moving through Lake and McHenry counties Tuesday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for eastern McHenry County around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in effect until 6:30 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm was located near Woodstock moving east at 20 mph.
The NWS warned the storm was capable of producing golf ball-sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts.
“People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees,” the warning said.
People were urged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of the building they were in.
Around 5:45 p.m., the NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southern Lake County until 7 p.m.
The warning said severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Prairie Grove to Oakwood Hills moving east at 30 mph.
The NWS said 70 mph wind gusts and half-dollar-sized hail were possible.
“Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings,” the warning said.
The NWS said residents should remain alert for a possible tornado. “Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure.”
Metra had halted trains on the Union Pacific North line and Union Pacific Northwest line due to the high winds.
The severe thunderstorms come as an excessive heat warning remains in effect for the two counties and the surrounding Chicago area.
The NWS said dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 110 to 115 degrees were reported on Tuesday.
