Police say the driver of an SUV has been charged after they allegedly ran a stop sign and caused a crash that left a motorcyclist severely injured on Route 31 in Algonquin Friday.
The Algonquin Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 7:43 p.m. Friday to the area of Route 31 and Oakwood Court in Algonquin for a vehicle crash with injuries.
A 911 caller reported a crash involving an Acura MDX SUV and a motorcycle.
The 911 caller reported the motorcyclist was unconscious, according to fire department radio traffic.
Fire crews reported the collision appeared to be a t-bone-style crash, which occurred in the intersection.
Algonquin Police Department Sgt. Johnny Beltran said a preliminary investigation showed the Acura SUV was traveling westbound on Oakwood Court.
It was attempting to turn southbound onto Route 31.
As the Acura entered the intersection, it was struck by a motorcyclist traveling northbound on Route 31, Beltran said.
Heavy damage was reported to the motorcycle and the motorcycle rider was down in the roadway when emergency crews arrived.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was requested to respond. It landed nearby at Mercyhealth Hospital in Crystal Lake.
An ambulance transported the victim to the hospital’s helipad and they were flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Beltran said the driver and passengers of the Acura only suffered minor injuries that did not require transport to the hospital.
The Algonquin Police Department said the serious traffic collision required an extensive investigation.
“We kindly ask for your patience and request that you avoid the area if possible. If you must travel through, please slow down and give our first responders the space they need to work safely,” the department said in an alert Friday evening.
Northbound Route 31 was shut down from North Main Street to Linden Avenue during the nearly four-hour-long investigation. It was reopened just after 11:25 p.m.
The driver of the SUV was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign and failing to wear a seatbelt, Beltran said.
The motorcyclist, who suffered severe injuries, is recovering and was discharged from the hospital on Monday.
The incident remains under investigation by the Algonquin Police Department and the Kane County Crash Assistance Response Team (KCART).
