A semi-truck, which was hauling a dump trailer, became engulfed in flames and caused a two-hour partial closure at a busy intersection in Round Lake Heights.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 11:46 a.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Fairfield Road and Rollins Road in Round Lake Heights for a report of a vehicle fire.
The driver of a semi-truck called 911 to report a fire in the engine of his truck, which he stopped in the middle of the intersection.
Firefighters arrived in two minutes to find the entire semi-truck cab fully engulfed in flames, according to Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Lt. Shane Page.
Firefighters called additional units to the scene to assist in extinguishing the fire.
The driver of the truck was uninjured and had gotten out of the truck, which was hauling a dump trailer, before the fire spread, Page said.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within five minutes. Page said lots of water was needed to extinguish the fire.
Traffic going east from the intersection and traffic going west toward the intersection was blocked for approximately two hours as the truck was stopped in the middle of the intersection.
Firefighters remained on the scene performing cleanup until a tow truck was able to remove the semi by around 1:40 p.m.
Page said it is unclear how the fire started but it is being investigated by the fire district.
