A man suffered a severe injury after being cut by a lawn mower near Marengo and had to be flown to the hospital Wednesday morning, fire officials said.

The Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts responded around 1:34 p.m. Thursday to the area of Kishwaukee Valley Road and Savannah Lane in unincorporated Marengo.

Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said crews initially received a call for an unknown medical emergency.

Paramedics arrived to find a male patient who had suffered a severe traumatic injury from a lawn mower.

Fire department radio traffic indicated the man was cut by the lawn mower and bleeding extensively.

Vucha said an unknown person applied a tourniquet to the victim to control the bleeding before paramedics arrived.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was requested due to the seriousness of the injury.

The helicopter landed in a field nearby the scene, Vucha said.

The victim was airlifted to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside in Rockford in serious condition.
