A woman was killed after she crashed into a popular sandwich shop on Waukegan Road in Deerfield early Saturday morning.
The Deerfield Police Department and Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District responded around 2:20 a.m. Saturday to Tony’s Subs, 1480 Waukegan Road in Deerfield, for a vehicle that crashed into a building.
Police officers and firefighters arrived and found a car on its roof with heavy damage.
The car hit and damaged Tony’s Subs, a popular local sandwich shop that has been open for over 50 years.
No other vehicle was involved, police said.
A preliminary investigation shows that the car was traveling southbound on Waukegan Road when it left the roadway and crashed into Tony’s Subs.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office said that the driver was a 25-year-old Waukegan woman.
The woman, who was the sole occupant, was trapped in the car and had to be extricated by firefighters.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The northeast corner of Tony’s Subs was damaged but appeared to remain structurally stable.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to investigate the crash.
The coroner’s office is working to schedule an autopsy on the woman.
The crash remains under investigation by the Deerfield Police Department and MCAT.
