The coroner has released the identity of a 25-year-old woman who was killed after she crashed into Tony’s Subs restaurant in Deerfield early Saturday morning.
An autopsy performed Tuesday showed Jareline Martinez, 25, of Waukegan, died as a result of blunt force injuries as a result of a crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Deerfield Police Department and Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District responded around 2:20 a.m. Saturday to Tony’s Subs, 1480 Waukegan Road in Deerfield, for a vehicle that crashed into a building.
Police officers and firefighters arrived and found a 2002 Honda Accord on its roof with heavy damage.
The Honda hit and damaged Tony’s Subs, a popular local sandwich shop that has been open for over 60 years.
No other vehicle was involved, police said.
A preliminary investigation shows that the Honda, driven by Martinez, was traveling southbound on Waukegan Road when it left the roadway and crashed into Tony’s Subs.
Police did not say what they believed to have led to the car leaving the roadway.
Martinez, who was the sole occupant, was trapped in the Honda and had to be extricated by firefighters.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The northeast corner of the restaurant was damaged but appeared to remain structurally stable.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to investigate the crash.
Tony’s Subs said their restaurant, which has since been boarded up, will be closed for an undetermined amount of time.
The crash remains under investigation by the Deerfield Police Department and MCAT.
