A man suffered serious injuries after his car struck a guardrail and the vehicle rolled over near Marengo Tuesday morning, leaving him trapped inside the wreckage.

The Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:04 a.m. Tuesday to the area of Kishwaukee Valley Road and Hiawatha Lane in unincorporated Marengo for a vehicle crash with entrapment.

Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said firefighters and paramedics arrived to find a single-vehicle crash.

The vehicle was rolled over in the roadway east of the intersection after it struck a guardrail, which was left damaged.

The adult male driver of the car was trapped inside the overturned vehicle, Vucha said.

Firefighters quickly extricated the driver and transferred him to an awaiting ambulance.

Vucha said a medical helicopter was initially requested but it was canceled due to an extended response time.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with serious injuries.

The male driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, Vucha said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash, which left Kishwaukee Valley Road shut down between Hiawatha Lane and Sullivan Road.

A tow truck removed the damaged vehicle and the roadway was reopened around 9 a.m.

A resident in the area said the car struck the guardrails on both sides of Kishwaukee Valley Road, which were just recently installed by the McHenry County Division of Transportation.

The resident called the guardrails “highly dangerous” because they were installed so closely to the edge of the roadway.

“But I believe it’s worth a look from everyone to reassess, with hopefully the fencing being moved back on both sides by at least a foot on each side,” the woman told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
