Four people were transported to the hospital after an SUV ran a red light and crashed into a Johnsburg school bus in Ringwood Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry Township Fire Protection District and Spring Grove Fire Protection District responded around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of Route 31 and Ringwood Road in Ringwood.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Porfirio Campos-Cruz said it was reported that multiple people suffered non-life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle crash.

Deputies arrived to find a 2008 black Saturn Outlook, occupied by four people, and a Johnsburg Community School District 12 bus, which was occupied by three people.

A preliminary investigation showed the Saturn was driving southbound on Route 31 approaching the traffic light at Ringwood Road, Campos-Cruz said.

Campos-Cruz said the driver of the Saturn reported they did not see the light change to red.

The Saturn driver attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision with the school bus, which was traveling westbound on Ringwood Road.

All four occupants of the Saturn were transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry, Campos-Cruz said.

Two students and the bus driver did not require transport to the hospital. The students were picked up from the scene by their parents or guardians.

Campos-Cruz said the Saturn sustained significant front-end damage and was towed from the scene. The school bus did not need to be towed.

The driver of the Saturn was cited for disobeying a traffic control device, driving too fast for conditions and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Johnsburg Community School District 12 said in a letter to parents that the bus was transporting the students home from Johnsburg Junior High School.

The two students had “no serious injuries” and the driver reported no injuries, the district said.

“The school district is working directly with the families involved to address any concerns,” the district said.

The crash had a small impact on afternoon routes outbound from Ringwood School Primary Center and possibly delayed student dropoff times.
